- One of our most common questions relating to wooden hand-carved / handmade products is “What’s Suar Wood?”
- Well, Suar wood tree, also known as “Albizia Saman or Monkeypod”, is a large tropical rain tree that can grow up to heights of 25 metres.
- It is characterised by its umbrella canopy, the tree naturally creates an insulated, cool climate underneath its thick, leafy branches. Prevalent in tropical Countries, such as Indonesia. In most parts it is a highly sustainable option and can be sourced ethically against modern FSC standards.
- Originally a tree native to South America. It was introduced to the region in the mid 19th century by Portuguese colonists as a plantation tree. A fast growing tree by nature, it has spread throughout the region, and is commonly used for wood slab furniture.
- Ferailles only use live FSC registered manufacturers that have both proof of original purchase as well as certification for a minimum of 18 months curing. We find this helps limit splitting, mould and damp spotting within the range.
- When the tree is heavily flowering, the stamens from the flowers sometimes drop to the ground, like rain. In Latin America the Monkeypod tree is called the Saman tree. This comes from the botanical name of Samanea Saman.
- In the Philippines, it’s called Mimosa, which is derived from the family name Mimosoideae.
